Doyle Brunson: A True Poker Champ in All Aspects

PKnown and nicknamed as Texas Dolly, Doyle Brunson is one poker pro who is quite well-known among his colleagues and among poker fans and enthusiasts. The nickname Texas Dolly came to be because of a commentator's mistake during one of the early tournaments that Brunson participated. The late Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder was the sports commentator who made a mistake in reading Brunson's name; he used to be a Las Vegas bookie as well.

Doyle Brunson is the first ever poker player to win $ 1 million in a tournament. He has accumulated many bracelets during the course of his poker-playing career.

Brunson was originally from Longworth, Texas and was born in August 10, 1933. He used to be an athlete playing for the All-State Texas Basketball Team and became a state champion in the process. The Minneapolis Lakers drafted him but a knee injury kept him from continuing his career in basketball. Brunson concentrated on his studies and made use of gambling as his source of finance in order to pay for his college tuition. He eventually got a Master's Degree in Administrative Education afterwards. Disappointed at his salary as a teacher, he decided to focus on playing poker instead. Brunson teamed up with other Texas pros such as Johnny Moss and Thomas Austin "Amarillo Slim" Preston.

Doyle Brunson tied with Johnny Chan in terms of number of bracelets and two consecutive victories in the World Series of Poker. Brunson had his two wins in 1976 and 1977 at the No-limit Texas Holdem Poker event. At this event, Brunson's starting hand was a ten and a two which was considered weak and consequently was named after him. He had the same number of bracelets as Johnny Chan, ten World Series of Poker bracelets all in all throughout his career. Brunson earned his tenth bracelet in 2005, just after a few days Johnny Chan won his tenth WSOP bracelet.

Brunson wrote a few books which are solely based on poker. One book he wrote was even considered as the ultimate guide to poker-playing because it tackles Brunson's strategy for winning thus he believes that producing this ultimate book cost him a substantial amount of money in the process. In 2004, a sequel to book was later published having the contributions of several other poker pros that made the book more substantial and more affluent. Bobby Baldwin, Chip Reese, Mike Castro, David Slansky and Joey Hawthorne contributed each a chapter to the sequel. But an early publication was authored by Doyle Brunson in 1976, also about the ins and outs of his poker tactics and experiences.
